New standards for certifying 100% Dominican tobacco: what we know
23 de August de 2026The Dominican Republic is moving toward a clearer technical definition for the expression “100% Dominican tobacco.” INTABACO director Iván Hernández Guzmán reported that proposed standards were submitted for public consultation and could be ready in December 2026.
What criterion was announced?
According to the official notice, a product seeking certification as 100% Dominican would need 100% of its components to be of national origin. The proposal is being developed with INDOCAL and is expected to become part of tobacco-sector NORDOM standards.
Why does it matter?
A verifiable definition can help buyers distinguish products made entirely with Dominican components from products containing foreign blends. It may also strengthen traceability, international reputation and protection against imitation.
Current status
This should not yet be described as a final rule in force. As of August 23, 2026, INTABACO describes it as a proposal under public consultation. Final requirements, certification procedures and effective dates will depend on the text approved by the competent authorities.
Interested businesses should maintain origin records for seed, leaf, wrapper, binder, filler and other inputs, and monitor official INTABACO and INDOCAL publications.
