How to Store Cigars Properly: Humidity, Temperature & Common Mistakes

6 de April de 2026 By master

Storing cigars properly is not complicated, but doing it wrong is one of the fastest ways to ruin an expensive purchase. Whether you have a single cigar or a collection of 200, the principles are the same: consistent humidity, stable temperature, and protection from light and odors.

The Ideal Humidity for Cigars

The golden standard for cigar storage is 65–70% relative humidity (RH). This range keeps the tobacco supple, maintains the oils that carry flavor, and prevents both drying out and over-humidification.

  • Below 60% RH: The cigar dries out, the wrapper cracks, and the smoke becomes harsh and bitter
  • Above 72% RH: Mold risk increases, the draw tightens, and tobacco beetle eggs can hatch (at 72°F/22°C or higher)

The Ideal Temperature for Cigars

Keep your cigars between 65–70°F (18–21°C). The humidity and temperature ranges overlap intentionally — the “65/65 rule” (65% RH at 65°F) is a popular guideline among collectors.

The critical danger zone is above 72°F (22°C) — at this point, tobacco beetle larvae can activate and destroy an entire humidor. If you live in a hot climate (like the Dominican Republic), air-conditioning your storage space is essential.

Types of Humidors

Desktop Humidor

The most common choice for personal collections of 20–100 cigars. A quality desktop humidor made of Spanish cedar regulates humidity naturally and imparts subtle cedar notes that complement the tobacco over time.

Travel Humidor Case

Leather-style or hard-shell cases for 3–10 cigars. Essential for anyone who travels and refuses to leave their cigars behind. Not suitable for long-term storage.

Cabinet Humidor

For serious collectors with 100+ cigars. Functions on the same principles but at scale, often with electronic humidity control.

Tupperdor / Coolerdor

Budget option: an airtight Tupperware or cooler with a Boveda pack. Surprisingly effective and popular among enthusiasts who want large capacity without the cost of a cabinet humidor.

Using Boveda Packs

Boveda two-way humidity packs are the simplest and most reliable way to maintain precise humidity. Available in 62%, 65%, and 69% RH — place them in your humidor and they automatically add or absorb moisture to maintain the target level. Replace every 3–6 months.

Common Storage Mistakes

  • Storing in the refrigerator — refrigerators are designed to remove moisture. Never store cigars in a fridge.
  • Ignoring the hygrometer — always monitor humidity with a calibrated hygrometer. Analog ones need calibration; digital ones are more reliable.
  • Mixing flavored and non-flavored cigars — flavored cigars will contaminate the aroma of premium unflavored cigars over time.
  • Overfilling the humidor — a packed humidor has poor air circulation. Leave 20–30% empty space.
  • Never rotating your stock — rotate cigars periodically so they age evenly.

Aging Cigars

Premium cigars improve with age, just like wine. At 65–68% RH and 65–68°F, cigars continue to ferment slowly, the flavors meld, and harsh notes soften over months and years. Dominican cigars — especially full-bodied Maduro vitolas like the Peralta Gran Toro Maduro — are excellent aging candidates.
